Faster Faster Faster

Not country.

Most of my life my dreams have been about being chased by an unseen pursuer or rushing frantically to get somewhere on time, with life-altering consequences. They are far more disturbing than it sounds. Any time I remember my dreams, I wake up distressed or terrified or terrifically distressed.

Water Over Stone

When writing about deep emotional trauma inflicted by those we should have been able to trust it helps to keep abstracting until there are no emotion words left, only the images they evoked.

Late last year memories of some childhood trauma surfaced and messed me up for a while.

Music is a safe way to rage at people.

Strikes

Great big storm behind the mountain
See a flash, start counting
Feel the fire, crackling breeze
Thunder rumbles right up to your knees
Lightning

Flash so bright you lose the sky
Feels like Armageddon’s nigh
Push down, move faster
Driving down the throat of disaster
Lightning

High voltage electrical whine
Into my ears through the telephone line
I hear the words, feel the frisson
You talked, I didn’t listen
Lightning

Tires rip the dark wet road
Under-thinking overload
A hundred miles in nothing flat
Never let you go like that
Lightning

Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Great big storm behind the mountain
Thunder rumbles right to your knees
Lightning

Breathing

whaletale

He drove the harpoon into its great white head
Over and over and it still wasn’t dead
Tangled in the lines as the beast went down
If he didn’t kill it now he was gonna drown

Maniacal hatred for he great white whale
The end of its life was the end of his tale

What if the whale had loved Ahab?
It’d never submerge
If the whale had loved Ahab
It’d give up the deep
So Ahab could keep—
If the whale had loved Ahab
Been able to purge
The notions that surge and flood
In the blood
If the whale had loved Ahab
We’d be on the verge
Might take the leap
Maybe we’d all keep
Breathing

Life and death for the captain and crew
It was life and death for the great whale, too
It wasn’t a hunt to fill any need
It was vengeance, it was anger, it was lust, it was greed

He vowed to hunt it to the end of the sea
And now it’s life and death for you and me

What if the whale had loved Ahab?
It’d never submerge
If the whale had loved Ahab
It’d give up the deep
So Ahab could keep—
If the whale had loved Ahab
Been able to purge
The notions that surge and flood
In the blood
If the whale had loved Ahab
We’d be on the verge
Might take the leap
Maybe we’d all keep

Back to You

It’s raining straight in my face and I’m losing my place in lane
as the big rigs go by spitting mud in my face
and it’s all I can do just to hang on and pray
up ahead there’s a curve to the left and I’ll go to the right
and I’ll be home tonight and you’ll be there to meet me
and help me try to make some sense of my day

last night or last week or last month or last year
i’d never have thought i’d be coming back here
to the place that i should never have left in the first place at all
but this morning i woke in more ways than one
underpaid undervalued and under the gun
was the last night week month year of climbing that wall

had a lotta friends who were really great
took the shirt off my back and the food from my plate
but they left me an old mandolin and a song or two
gave a beat up car and an old guitar
and a mandolin I couldn’t play anyway
for this old road warrior that’s bringing me back to you

two iron lungs between my knees
all the leatherwork died of some horrid disease
and I’ll bet you a nickel ain’t no nickel left in that chrome
it’s ragged and ugly but it sure is fast
eating miles and bugs and oil and gas
and time on the road to the hills that we call home

up ahead there’s a curve to the left and I’ll go to the right
and I’ll be home tonight and you’ll be there to meet me
and help me try to make a little sense of my day
